Miles Dewey Davis III (May 26, – September 28, ) was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. He is among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music. Davis adopted a variety of musical directions in a five-decade career that kept him at the forefront of many major stylistic developments in jazz.
This new recording presents orchestral suites based on two of the most significant operas in history. Der Rosenkavalier found its place in the concert hall from the beginning, first with two waltz sequences and later with the famous suite. But Elektra remained purely on the opera stage until now. We proudly present these Strauss suites, new and old, in definitive interpretations from Manfred Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, in superb audiophile sound.
The comprehensive notes by Manfred Honeck offer an in-depth look into the composer’s soul, and a fascinating look at the mind and decisions of a great conductor. To quote from Honeck’s music notes: I dare to say that in a way, Tchaikovsky experienced his own death through the music. One can be sure that only somebody who is deeply empathetic about both life and death can be capable of creating such an atmosphere and I am deeply grateful for the great musicians of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra who went with me on this journey, requiring the utmost technical perfection to reach such a level of expression.

Find Ivan Lins on Amazon. Website–Ivan Lins Offical Website: The smooth, romantic Brazilian beat that underlies much of contemporary jazz-pop in the United States has often originated with the music of Brazilian singer-songwriter Ivan Lins. A superstar in Brazil with a career stretching back to the classic era of bossa nova music, Lins gained fans in the United States and Europe as he collaborated with urban contemporary greats George Benson and Quincy Jones in the s and launched an independent American career.
His popularity, rather than declining as he aged, continued to grow, and in , 35 years after breaking into the Brazilian music scene, he won a Latin Grammy Award for his album Cantando Historias. Lins was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in , but when he was two years old his father, a naval engineer, enrolled in a graduate program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, outside Boston.
It was there that Lins grew up, in a brownstone apartment near the Boston Public Garden, and American music made a strong impact on him when he was very small. Listeners to Lins’s sophisticated adult pop wouldn’t necessarily think first of Disney as a possible influence, but Lins pointed to the music of his childhood in explaining the structure of his songs. He took up piano and listened to big band jazz from his parents’ record collection, studying the arrangements of Pittsburgh bandleader Billy May.

The title of his breakthrough album The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery is not mere hyperbole, and to many listeners at the time it seemed like an understatement. The first phrase is the introduction to his solo, and the second is his playing on the bridge of the tune during his first chorus. The only problem at the time was that I had no idea which album this particular version was from. The recording appears to be from an album entitled Live in Europe, dating the performance to In his arrangement of the tune, not only does he transpose the tune from G to the more unusual E a transposition which allows him a catchy chordal tag over a low pedal E , he transforms it from a ballad to a bossa, and doubles the length of the form from 32 to 64 bars.
The solo begins 2: Throughout, Wes exploits the full range of the guitar, and makes great use of triplet figures, often in conjunction with sweeping arpeggios. The drive and assurance on display is phenomenal, and prevents the piece from becoming pedestrian — something I can easily imagine happening in the hands of most guitarists attempting this arrangement.
There is much to admire over the course of the improvisation and plenty to study.
Leeds resurgence brings Bossa to table
Ladies, ladies, ladies… You are beautiful. Before last night, you were twinkles of inspiration in our eyes. Surely if the gay men could pull off such a fabulously flirty happy hour once a month, the gay women could do it too — with fruitier drinks and sweeter cologne. On the first night of Gay Guy Happy Hour, 75 men came out to salute one another. Last night, 90 women were toasting at Lez Liquor Hour.
The consistency of the underlying bossa nova pulse invites Wes to explore rhythmic ideas, which he does to great effect in bars and The B and E quavers in the second half of bar 17 are emphatic, but avoid sounding too straight-laced by virtue of straddling the bar line, and forming twin pedal points against the changing harmony, before spiralling downwards at twice the speed.
The other regulars included J. Davis reunited with Cawthon and their daughter when they moved to New York City. Parker became a roommate. He recorded for the first time on April 24, when he entered the studio as a sideman for Herbie Fields ‘s band. On November 26, Davis participated in several recording sessions as part of Parker’s group Reboppers that also involved Gillespie and Max Roach , displaying hints of the style he would become known for.
In Parker’s song ” Now’s the Time “, Davis played a solo that anticipated cool jazz. He then joined a big band led by Benny Carter , performing in St. Louis and remaining with the band in California.

An engaging performer with an ear for picking well-constructed songs and just enough rebellious pluck to insist on recording with his live band, the Dancehall Doctors, rather than session musicians. Being married to one of the most attractive women in country — hell, in popular music — is just icing on the cake. Live Like You Were Dying continues his streak, armed with a handful of exceptionally sturdy songs that are not only pleasant radio fodder, but also daring enough to push at the boundaries of conventional country fare.
The energized opener “How Bad Do You Want It” flirts with pop-crossover status, its briskly rocking guitars setting a toe-tapping pace the rest of the album strains to keep up with. One has to give McGraw credit for spending his hard-earned fan capital on songs like “Drugs and Jesus” about the two prevalent options available to questing souls in a small town and the bracing “Kill Myself,” a nervy take on a despondent man’s contemplation of suicide.
In fact, perseverance in the face of adversity is the album’s central theme, from the earnest title track to the formulaic “We Carry On” to the likable “Do You Want Fries With That.

Audile 2 2 g translucent red LPs Produced by: Am and Sergio Mendes Engineered by: The music melds bossa nova, soul, samba, and other older styles with hip-hop. Rather, its issue on vinyl is for the pleasure of vinyl fans, many of whom are not necessarily audiophiles. The more time that passes, the more similar the music of an era tends to sound. With hip-hop, the convention seemed obvious from the get-go. To many ears, the non-melodic stripped down sound and lyrical simplicity was a grand innovation and something truly new.
To others, and they know who they are, this is a large pile of non-musical, coarse, barked bullshit with a beat. Which is what elders in the 60s who grew up on Duke Ellington and big band music said about various acts consisting of 4 clowns with guitars. The raps are pretty lame compared to the state of the art and those who luxuriate in the South American sensuality of bossa nova and Brazilian music generally, will find the coarseness of this stuff stultifying.
I found myself actually enjoying this record because you get the feeling that for will. There are no liner notes, no attempt to explain the concept and limited credits, which is a real shame.
Courtyard By Marriott Pittsburgh Downtown in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
Guest Reviews of Courtyard By Marriott Pittsburgh Downtown overall rating out of 5 Kathy Even with the great price on this hotel, it still ended up being expensive because of the valet parking, and each and everytime I left the hotel I had to pay to park in addition to the valet parking. It was a hidden expense I had not planned on. Valet parking, maid service, clean, great downtown location Not the Hotel fault, but driving in downtown Pittsburgh was very confusing overall rating out of 5 Tony We had a very good time in Pittsburgh and the hotel staff made the wedding, we attended, enjoyable.
Great directions from the valet. The staff was extremely helpful. We were grateful for all the assistance we received.

In my town everybody had a route they cruised most started at a little drive in called The Steeple and went from there to Doug Brooms then crossed the street and went down Reedville road , to the Famous Beacon drive in which is still in business and the same crowd still meets there. At that time Spartanburg S. Most of us worked for some of the builders, cleaned the shop whatever they wanted us to do just to be around them. We could be at a drag strip in less then thirty minutes in any direction.
Such great memories of cruising and listening to our favorite music, Jan and Dean, the Beach Boys, and all the Doo Wop. I sure wish those days were still around so my grandkids could have experienced our great times.

The Prime-8 gorilla is aimed at boys from 8 to 12 years of age, and the Penbo pink penguin is aimed at girls from 4 to 8. Expect both to join the long list of failed toys with robotic underpinnings. Prime-8 runs on its spiral gorilla arms, using a technology similar to RHex, and navigates a variety of terrains, including grass, gravel, and thick carpet at high speed. Other functions are interactive or personality related.
The interactive Penbo plays the cute card as strongly as Prime-8 goes for the rough-and-tumble role.
In , Johnny Mathis attempted one of the biggest gambles of his lengty career: an album of disco-ready funk and bossa nova tracks, written and produced by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, the founders of Chic and hitmakers for Sister Sledge, Diana Ross and others.
His identity was not confirmed for weeks, but in time he would become internationally famous as a bold, or very imprudent, figure.
